Some musings and readings that I’ve come across after audition the headphones -

rt “Unlike some other headphones, the pushed bass does not come at the expensive of the midrange, which AIAIAI just nailed, like a tsunami pouncing on the shores of 5K land. The mids offer plenty of space and depth allowing you to hear a reverb sail into the sunset, without the tail shattering into pieces or abruptly cutting off. Words like “precise” – “clarity” and “20/20 hearing” were used by our evaluators to describe the AIAIAI’s fidelity in the mids and when we A/B’s our stock of DJ cans, which included Pioneer, Ultrasone, Sony, Senheiser and AKG, everything else sounded dull and discolored by comparison. The dynamics almost feel like the in ear monitors earphone.  No isolation but it feels like a concert in my head.

wah lan eh… so cheap

This is a steal for a high end sounding earphone, added with the Ubermuzik Tiny Tube Dac.. Orgasmic and very satisfying for vocals.

The mids texture and sweetness is there.

Tonally sound won’t say extremely accurate but close enough.

Granted that Beyerdynamics, Sennheisers, Koss and other German brands has it’s legacy and fair share of the headphone market here in Singapore because they’re tried and tested brands.

However I’m always on a look out for potential gems that I might try and hedge on sometimes and I’m on the look at at all times, trust me – It’s an obsession actually.

It was a while back when I was reading Headfi.org and came across this thread which spoke about a mythical Headphone brand that is relatively unknown.

The day I got the GMP 8.35 D…what a HUGE surprise!!! Monitor headphones, INDEED!! From the first moment that I plugged them into my soundcard, they just sounded perfectly balanced with a lot of power. The low is really warm and the bass is just enough to really pump the kick and the sub bass. And they do create the air of the sub feeling, which is really important to me as an electronic music producer. The highs are great. The percussion, snare, high hats, the whole drum section has such clear details with smooth highs, it really surprised me! Let’s say it like this: they are more balanced than the K271, they are more bass controlled and with more open highs than the M 50 and they are not as aggressive as my previous Ultrasones, which I do love a lot. So, for me, this is the best combination for closed monitor headphones.  ”

Comparison.

 HD 25 1-11 vs. German Maestro’s  8.35 GMP

Portability and comfort and sturdyness.

HD 25.

The HD 25’s are very lightweight and they feel good around the neck. These headphones you can throw on the ground (or well if it falls or something) or in your bag with no problem, it doesn’t seem like they would break fast. For comfort, they don’t bother me at all and long listening sesions didn’t make the headphones uncomfortable.

The Maestro 8.35GMP.

For portability the 8.35 aren’t as great as the Sennheisers. When around the neck they don’t bother me but I could guess it bothers some people that they are against your neck a little when you wear them. And obviously they are heavier then the HD 25’s. Also the Maestro’s have a pretty huge cable with a : (I don’t know how to call it, when your cable is too short it extends and it goes curling up when the pressure is released, help me out here).   I have no problem with the weight but for portability the HD 25’s would win. For comfort the Maestro is definitely better. The leather goes all around your ear and it feels a little spacy inside. The leather pad is pretty soft and it feels nice to your head.

SQ

The HD’s are quite balanced phones, and it produces good sound for it size. However the Maestro’s are superior on sound quality, I’ll explain why. The soundstage is larger obviously. Also with the HD25’s I had trouble hearing vocals from time to time, the Maestro’s bring the vocals forward a lot more. They both sound quite balanced and while I see this as a good thing, sometimes I really miss some quantity in the bass. Especially with music with lot’s off bass, like chillout or drumm and bass.

But o well it are balanced phones and that is what you choose for. Another plus point for the Maestro is that it has a lot more detail. Having said this, please bear in mind I hadn’t done a cable upgrade . Don’t get me wrong the Sennheisers definitely sound good, but the Maestro’s just sound better.

Isolation.

They both offer excellent isolation! The Maestro’s are a bit better then the Sennheisers though, but the sennheisers isolate pretty good too

When I was in china, my mind was blown at how cheap and great the Dunu were – Trident, Hades, Hephaes, Ares and Cirus.

All I can say it was a great experience being at the Dunu Factory because the boss – Mike was very hospital and extremely nice to me.

I liked his attitude and the energy he brought – ” I may like this sound, but we are making it for the enthusiast for what they like.”

Well something along that lines when he was telling about the sound he’d prefer  (they were still tuning the Hephaes at that point of time.

Here are some pictures of when I was there in May -

They wanted me to QC the Hepheas at that point of time – At that point of time, there was two sound.

One with less decay but more attack but it sounded more artificial and the other one was warmer, slightly more decay but more natural.

I sat there listening to one by one, it was important for them because they were going to launch the product in Beijing.

I was given a short tour of the Dunu factory, It turns out that they not only produce their own In ear Monitors Earphones or Headphones.

It seems that they are also specializing in O.E.M business, which is where their heritage lies.

Their Factory is huge! They employ about 500 workers if i’m not wrong. At lunch time, you see a little army walking out the front gate going for lunch.

Anyway I brought back the In ear monitor earphones to Singapore after I came back.

I allowed all my customers when they came down, most of them had their mind blown!

I’m a bass head, so I loved the Tridents the most – Even though it was the cheapest the sound was awesome.

All my customer loved it.. they were raving about it -

imagine the casing solid like the monster turbine, smaller and lighter with super cable quality. tried 2 of them, i think a ba and another a dynamic driver one.my gf tried it too and was impress as well. tried it with the ttd as well as unamped from a iphone.

sound is very balanced and quite detailed for the ba. for the dynamic one it was deep and fast hitting bass but wont intrude the rest of the sound spectrum.

can easily fight with the mid level iems like the w2 and ue sf series. what is most unbelievable is the price. at the price louis quoted, the casing alone is worth that price!

anyway here are my impressions of these dynamic iems paired with Uber Musik Tiny Tube DAC.

FAST Bass response.neither bloated nor muddy.knock you in the head well on some fast-paced trance tunes.
Mids are pretty forward
Highs are awesomely clear. not sibilant tho!

look, there are the IE8 and Shure 535s(haven tried the 535s b4) dynamics IEMs waiting for your $500-$700. or you could try half the price and see if you can get anything that comes close.

this is a steal. we’ve been conned by the big brands. China can make great stuff if they want to, and STILL half the price tag.

I went over to Louis’s place to pass him my earphones and impressions so I stayed a little long, which a little became 2 hours plus! I tried the Single BA and Dynamic manufactured by Dunu, paired together with the Tiny tube. When I put it on to have a listen, my jaw immediately dropped.

Never ever had this experience before! It’s just like the sudden adrenaline rush to your head, making you want even more! The experience of listening to Dynamic driver or BA driver iem has never been as such before. Build quality wise, it feels really good in your hands, feeling just the Monster Turbines. After the IEM’s, louis let me audition another item of his, the German Maestro GMP 240.

This headphones isn’t like any other GMP 240 outside. It has been self modded in a way where the soundstage, clarity, bass response is just simply indescribable in words. It glued me to my seat for an hour plus just listening and truly enjoying music. Afterwards, I went on to try the HD650 by Sennheiser and it became all less exciting and lively. The soundstage with the GMP 240 is just like you’re in a club with the live band infront of you and you could just close your eyes and enjoy, taking you from the real world to the music world.

Overall, the tiny tube is the Most Bang for Buck DAC I’ve ever heard! Build quality and design are all simply amazing. However, the most important aspect is the audio that comes out of any earphones/headphones, be it $40 or $400 dollars. A rare opportunity to be able to try out Louis’s stuff and I’m really honored!

Verdict
While neither Ares nor Crius has a killer sound quality in their price range, they do have a lot of things to love for. Combining an easy going sound, great build quality and accessories all in a highly polished packaging, DUNU has not one but two IEM that well worth their price, and they are only two of the first four models that have been launched to the market so far. With DN-16 (*said to have even better sound quality than the previous four models) now on the horizon, and the dual dynamic DN-20 in its final stage of prototyping, we can expect more to come from the house of DUNU. Hopefully by the time they will have expanded to international market too.

DUNU-TopSound gives you many affordable choices for people wanting to upgrade from their earbuds or aren’t happy with those cheap $15 earphones that looked like such a good deal at the time. The price is right, the build quality is top notch, the sound ranges from good to really good and DUNU has been around for a while. As long as  you know what your listening preferences are, the choices are fairly easy. If you’re unsure, I highly recommend the Ares as the best all-rounder of the bunch.

Conclusion

When using DUNU’s Trident earphones, more often than usual, I found myself getting lost in the music rather than listening to them critically. They’re just a very enjoyable pair of IEMs, a pair of IEMs that focus on the listener’s enjoyment rather than trying to pick out and present each and every detail. This will probably be a point of contention to some folks, likely detail freaks, but to just about everyone else looking for a good budget set will find something to like in DUNU’s inexpensive Trident earphones. And that’s the Trident’s biggest selling point. For around $40 (and under, depending on where you look), you’re getting a pair of earphones that hits above its price range and is one of my favorite bang for the buck earphones.

Final Thoughts

When a company names a product after a Greek God, I always have to ask the question, does the product have the quality, looks, and build to have the honor of bestowing the name? In this case, it’s nothing short of a yes. The DUNU Hephaes are not only good enough to have the name; they basically are Hephaestus in headphone form. The warm, powerful signature, the flame design (no pun intended), and the strong build quality really all add together to form a mini Hephaestus; a Hephaes.

Final Thoughts:

        The Dunu-16 Hephaes, is good for the people who was thinking of buying Beats by Dre, since after you compare these to the Beats, you will know this is much better than the offerings from Dr. Dre. Also for comparison with SE215, I found these sounding more full than the SE215, due to it’s forward mids. I would say the sound is on par with the competition in this price range. But, have they got the SM3 SQ? No, I am afraid, I have auditioned the SM3 for a week, this still have quite a long way to go IMO. I would recommend this to people at the under $100 price range.

Overall:

Basically the two cheap upstarts show you don’t need to spend a lot to get a solid phone. The Radius is a good phone but I feel it is overpriced. Xears continues to provide great bang for the buck and is showing improved build and sound than previous models. The Trident I previously reviewed continues to impress me. The big brother Hephaes is twice the price but brings more tips, ear guides, more cases, and slightly better build quality, and technically better sound making them worth their around $100 price tag. Still, gimme the Trident out of the whole bunch. They are most fun/enjoyable, inexpensive, second best in build quality, quite close in technical ability, and have the cool factor(though that is subjective, your opinion may vary).

I bust my ass day in and out just to push the limit of audio to new heights, put in my whole life.
Just because some people can’t give a shit the same way that I do, doesn’t mean that I really care for their lost.

What lost I’m talking about?
The lost that one has when one has not done the best he could and would to push the envelope.
Over the past year, I’ve devoted my time and life into pushing new limits, finding ways to create value in products that people do not even appreciate.
Cross boundaries and climb through hoops just to make it happen.

I find the fucking gems in the rough and polish them out.
And some wanna-bes want to be a dick head and be a show off over nothing, that’s laudable but utterly pathetic.

I see it all the time, from the establish adults to kids.
It grosses me out each time, they call themselves “enthusiast”.. why? Cause they have no clue what it is to enjoy a hobby.
Yet they want to claim authority and lord over everyone else and act like a prick, just because they want to feel special..tsk grow already mate.

It is an insult to me and those who really appreciate good music and good sound to know that people based their opinion on others.
